Practical advice for independent couriers

Owner-driver courier work: find jobs that fit your van

Owner-driver courier work means taking responsibility for the whole delivery: choosing suitable jobs, agreeing the price, planning the journey and keeping evidence of completion. Drive It helps approved independent drivers organise that work, including their own customers’ bookings and eligible Deliverate jobs.

Build more than one source of courier work

Start with the businesses and customers you can serve reliably. Local retailers, furniture sellers and repeat private customers may need collections, deliveries or returns. A clear service area, realistic availability and reliable communication help those customers decide when to use you again.

Marketplace opportunities can fill gaps in your diary. Review available Deliverate requests alongside your existing commitments. Demand varies by route, date and vehicle; joining Drive It does not promise a full diary or a minimum income.

Choose work around the vehicle you actually have

A delivery that fits the postcode may still be wrong for your van. Ask about dimensions, weight, packaging, access, stairs and help with loading. Allow for equipment and every item already on board. Do not assume a customer will help lift an item unless this has been agreed.

Furniture and appliance deliveries often need more planning than a small parcel. Check the crew requirement before accepting, particularly when goods need two people or specialist handling. A larger quoted amount is not useful if you cannot safely fulfil the job.

  • Collection and delivery postcodes, dates and time windows.
  • Item dimensions, weight, quantity and suitable loading equipment.
  • Vehicle capacity, access restrictions and required crew.
  • The amount you will receive, who pays and when payment is due.
  • The delivery evidence and customer instructions required.

Keep direct customers’ jobs in the same working day

You can enter your own collection and delivery jobs into Drive It, organise routes and keep instructions with the relevant stop. This gives you a practical way to manage direct work alongside eligible network jobs.

If work originates on another platform, only enter information you are authorised to use and follow that platform’s terms. Adding a job manually does not create an automatic connection to Courier Exchange, SDCN, AnyVan or Shiply.

Show customers what happened

Use delivery progress updates and customer tracking links to keep the recipient informed. Record the outcome, recipient details, photos and signature against the correct job. Clear evidence helps answer questions about where an item was left or whether a delivery was attempted.

Tracking relies on the app, the driver’s recorded updates, location permissions and connectivity. Set up your phone before starting work and use the driver guides if you need help.

Try the workflow with your real driving day

Approved Drive It users receive a 60-day trial. The £79 including VAT monthly membership starts from day 61 when renewal is authorised. Google Maps usage and applicable network charges are separate. Use the trial to assess the tools with work you already have as well as opportunities available to you.

Drive It is for independent courier work. If you are looking for an employed driver position or an agency shift, follow the VanDriver.work vacancy link on the Drive It homepage.
